“I Don’t Like My Nose”

BY MEREDITH KNIGHT

When we interact with another person we generally notice their eyes and mouth first, not their nose. But our noses play a vital role. “The ideal nose fits your face, appears straight and natural in appearance, and allows you to breathe normally,” said renowned facial plastic surgeon Yadro Ducic. “There should be a marriage of appearance and function in the nose. Most of us have asymmetric faces, yet we expect our noses to be symmetric. They usually aren’t. We can, however, with surgery, fool the discerning eye into thinking a nose is more symmetric than it is.” There are cosmetic reasons for plastic surgery on the nose, such as a hump which can be taken down. And there are health-related reasons, such as a deviated septum, which makes it difficult or unpleasant to breathe. “The outside framework of the nose can affect breathing as much—and sometimes more—than the internal framework,” Dr. Ducic said. “Many people think any work on the outside of the nose is cosmetic and breathing issues are all internal. But if the outside is crooked and certain areas called ‘internal and external valves’ are collapsed, it will affect breathing quite a bit.” There’s also delicate work to refine the tip of the nose and make the overall nose as straight as possible. “Sometimes this can be done through incisions inside the nose and sometimes a small, usually imperceptible scar below the nose is needed to provide the surgeon and health-related issues, Dr. Ducic is the director of the only program in North Texas accredited by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. There, he trains facial plastic surgeons on cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries. He’s performed thousands of successful surgeries and published sufficient access,” Dr. Ducic said. “To maintain support and fill in irregularities we often use ‘grafts’ which are small pieces of cartilage we ‘recycle’ from the crooked part of the septum and on occasion, from behind the ear or the rib cage.”

Dr. Ducic is board certified in both facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and otolaryngology (head and neck surgery). Dr. Ducic has published over 180 articles and book chapters on topics such as cosmetic surgery, reconstructive, maxillofacial trauma, and skull base surgery. He lives in DFW with his four children—Aleksa, Luka, Nikola, and Nadia—where he enjoys sports, travel, and spending time with his family.
“Each patient and each nose is unique,” he said. “Visit DFWAesthetics.com to schedule an appointment for a hands-on assessment to see how I can help you.”
